1399775 Coiling springs J W G HUHNEN 27 Feb 1973 [28 Feb 1972] 9497/73 Heading B3E In a coil spring winding machine, a pair of feed rollers grip the feed wire and can be rotated about the axis of the wire in the region of the rollers so as to twist the wire. The amount of twist may be such that plastic deformation of the wire in torsion does not occur prior to winding the spring. Fig. 1 shows a twisting head comprising feed rollers 100 driven by gears 104, 101, shaft 108, and gear 102, the rollers 100 being mounted in a drum 107 rotatable on shaft 108 and a wire guide 105 by integral gear 103. That portion of wire 103 between the rollers and the coil forming abutments 106 can be twisted as desired by suitably arranging the relative drive speeds of gears 102, 103. To enable a continuous length of wire to be fed, the supply arrangement of Fig. 2 may be used. A coil 47 of wire is located on fingers 49 on a table 48 rotatably mounted on a platform 52 and driven by motor 50. A device 51 continuously ensures dynamic balance of the table and coil. The platform is supported in sprung manner on a fixed pin 55. The wire passes through a guide loop 57 and between gripping rollers 58 mounted in a drum 59 rotatable by motor 16. The rate of twist generated by rollers 100 equals that of rollers 58, and equals that generated by the turns coming off coil 47 plus the rate of rotation of table 48, so that between the coil 47 and rollers 58, and between rollers 58 and rollers 100, the wire is rotated but not twisted. A flying shear is used to sever the wire between formation of successive coils. In an alternative, a flying shear is not used, and the head of Fig. 1 is stopped between formation of successive coils. In this case, the source of Fig. 2 is far enough from the head of Fig. 1 that the twist generated by the source during stoppage of the head can be stored in the wire without plastic deformation, this stored twist being just dissipated during the next operating cycle of the head.
