Abstract

1,116,476. Making rovings: twisting apparatus. CERTAIN - TEED PRODUCTS CORPORATION. 7 Oct.. 1966 [29 June. 1966], No. 44976/66. Headings DID and D1F. In a method of producing a roving package, a number of parallel -strands which are not twisted around one another, are wound on a non-rotating support and twisted during the winding so as to produce one revolution of twist of the strands in the roving around one another for each turn around the support. The method is particularly applicable to the production of glass fibre rovings from strands withdrawn together from a number, e.g. 60 of packages which are themselves produced in each case from a number e.g. 204 of filaments. When a roving is withdrawn from a package so produced, it receives a twist which may prove undesirable in the subsequent use of the roving, and the method of the invention aims to impart a twist to the roving to neutralize the twist imparted by the withdrawal. The roving is laid on a mandrel carried by a hollow shaft 44, Fig. 2, which does not rotate but is reciprocated axially, as a drum 22 rotates around the shaft. The drum is driven from a motor 13 through belts attached to pulleys one at each end of a shaft 16. The shaft is reciprocated by a cam 33 rotated by a shaft 32 driven from the motor through a shaft (25. Fig. 1 ) fitted with a fly-wheel (28) and a speed-reducer (31). The cam rotates between plates 36 with cam followers 34, 35 which rock about a pivot 37 and are connected by a pivoted link 41 to a clamp 43 fixed to the shaft. For laying the yarn, the inside of the drum has pivoted to it an arm 59, Fig. 4, spring-urged at its pivot so that a roller 68 at its free end is kept in contact with the mandrel 49. The arm carries pigtail and guide-eyes 64, 65. The strands of the roving travel axially through the tube, are gathered in the pigtail 64, pass as a roving through the guide 65 and under the roller 68, to be wound with one revolution of twist for each rotation of the drum in the form of a cylindrical package. For doffing, the arm is pulled away from the mandrel by a handle (63, Fig. 5, not shown) and a collar 53 is removed by undoing a set screw 54 so that the package can be slid off the mandrel.
