Controlling variable-speed gearing. - In pedaloperated gear control devices for motor-cycles and the like a hand or foot actuated trip is provided to prevent the unintentional overrunning of a particular gear. The gear is controlled by a shaft operated through pinion and sector gearing from a pedal 1 on the shaft of which is fixed a sector 11. An arm 17 loosely mounted on the shaft rides in a gap in the flange of the sector 11. A spring stop 19 engages the arm 17 and, in the position shown, prevents further depression of the pedal to bring the high gear into operation by the engagement of the arm 17 with one end of the gap. On withdrawing the stop 19 to effect a drive on the top gear, the arm 17 falls to the other end of the gap, and by its engagement with the stop prevents the pedal being moved to the neutral and reverse positions. The stop can be withdrawn by a hand-operated Bowden wire or in a modification, by the pivotal movement of the tread 23 of the pedal.
