Abstract

271,641. Triumph Cycle Co., Ltd., and Parnell, F. G. May 21, 1926. Controlling variable-speed gearing.-Control mechanism for variable-speed gearing suitable for motor cycles comprises a rockable shaft 2, Figs. 1 and 2, carrying lugs 20 which slide longitudinally of the shaft relatively to stops 23, 24 which engage the lugs to prevent wrong movements. The stops 23, 24 are fast in a casing part 12 in which the shaft 2 pivots. An arm 14 splined to turn with the shaft 2 supports the bearing pivot 16 of a control lever 3 which engages the end of a stem 21 integral with the lugs 20. From the shaft 2 and fast thereto depends an arm 5 having cam slots 7, 8 for carrying out the gear changes. The lever 3 is biased by a spring 17 into mid position when the lugs 20 engage both stops and so lock the change arm 5. On turning the lever 3 about the pivot 16, the lugs 20 may be thrust clear of one or other stop, so that a subsequent pivotal motion is possible of the lever 3 and arm 5 about and with the pivot, shaft 2 in one direction only, either for changing up or down according to the position of the lugs 20, Fig. 6. A spring bolt 26 helps to lock the change arm 5 in gear positions.
