Abstract

535,746. Controlling variable-speed gearing. STANDARD MOTOR CO., Ltd., GRINHAM, E. G., and TURNER, W. R. Nov. 9, 1939, No. 29696. [Class 80 (ii)] Relates to control means for change-speed gearing of the kind in which an operating-rod is both rotatable and axially movable by means of a hand-lever, and a disengageable stop is provided to limit the turning movement of the lever, and therefore the sliding movement of the rod, in one direction, so as to form a " reverse stop." The operating-rod 15, Fig. 4, slides in a bush 14, which can turn in a bracket 12, secured, for example, to the steering-column 11 of a motor vehicle. The bush carries a forked arm 18 having slots, in which rests the pivot-pin 21 of a hand-lever 17. A pin 22 at the end of the lever engages in a slot in the end of the rod 15, so that the rod can be slid by turning the lever about its pivot 21. The rod is turned, for the selection of various speeds, by rotation of the hand-lever together with the bush 14, and a further selection can be made by raising the lever into the position shown in Fig. 3. Depression of the lever into the position shown in Fig. 5, which serves for reversing, is normally prevented by the engagement of the lever pivot 21 with an arm 16 on the rod 14. The lever can be drawn out lengthwise against the pull of a spring 25 to disengage it from the arm 16, and the lever can then be moved into the reversing position.
