348,998. Controlling variable-speed gearing. VULCAN MOTOR & ENGINEERING CO. (1906), Ltd., Rufford Road, Crossens, and ROBERTS, G. P., 29, Dover Road, Birkdale, both in Southport, Lancashire. Oct. 25, 1930, No. 32124. [Class 80 (ii).] A control for the changespeed gearing of a vehicle which can be mounted on the engine unit and brings the hand-lever 8 well forward of the gearing comprises a lever 12, Fig. 1, which pivots about a spherical joint 16 in two perpendicular planes. The lever 8, which has a rectangular arm 9 ball-jointed to lever 12, turns on a hollow transverse pivot 6, Fig. 3, carried by a lower lever 4 turning about a pivot 3 fore-and-aft of the vehicle. A selector shaft 10 carries an arm 11 ball-jointed to lever 12. To rock shaft 10, levers 8, 9, 12, 11 are moved in the plane of Fig. 1, a vertical plane. To slide shaft 10, levers 8, 4 are turned together about pivot 3, when lever 12 rocks in a horizontal plane. A fixed stop 20 is provided in the path of a rod 21 sliding within lever 8, to prevent reversed driving being engaged inadvertently. The rod 21 must be raised on purpose from a knob 25.
