Abstract

353,068. Variable-speed gear. GARWOOD, B. G., 12, Stoughton Street, and PARKER, F. N., Allen House, Newarke Street, both in Leicester. April 17, 1930, No. 12185. [Class 80 (ii).] A construction of variable-speed gear for driving a switch drum comprises a vertical shaft 9 the lower end of which is carried in a spring-controlled slidable bearing block 10 and which has slidably feathered thereon a cone gear 11 made up of several bevel wheels adapted to move bodily in one direction under the influence of a spring 12 between the gear and a collar 13, and adapted to mesh with a driving wheel 15 on a shaft 16 driven through gearing from a motor 17. The gears are shifted by levers 14, 26 of which the lever 14 pivots on a fulcrum 24, its forked end embracing the shaft 9 which at the other end is connected by a link 25 to one end of a bent lever 26 fulcrumed on a pin 27, the other bifurcated end moving a rod 28 connected to the block 10. When the lever 14 is moved to allow the cone gear to rise, the lever 26 is moved to carry the gear away from the driving pinion 15. The levers are operated from a knob 31 through a spur-wheel 30 engaging a rack 32 connected to the lever 14. The shaft 9 is connected by a universal joint to a shaft 5 driving the drum through worm gear.
