To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK DIEHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wabash, in the county of Wabash and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Means for Producing Relative Movement Between Members, of which the followingis.
a specification. The device forming the subjectmatter of this application is a press, adapted to be used in connection with wood veneer and the like, to secure a pressing of the same as the glue in the veneer is drying. The invention aims to provide novel means for operating an upper pressure member with respect to the base which carries the stock to be compressed, novel means being provided for moving the upper pressure member at different speeds, thereby to regulate the pressure applied to the material, and novel means being provided for stopping the movement of the pressure member when the same has arrived at the limits of its travel.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevatlon, a device constructed in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a top plan; Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure l; Figure- 4 is ,a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 2 Figure 5 is a diagram showing the circuit. In carrying out the invention, there is provided a base 1 from which posts 2 upstand, the posts having threads at their upper ends. A hollow upper pressure member 4 is mounted for vertical reciprocation on the posts 2, the ressure member 4 and the base 1 being supp ied with cooperating tables 5 between which the material is pressed.
An electric motor 6 is mounted on the upper pressure member 4. Bearings 7 are erected on the upzper pressure member 4 and in the bearings adriven shaft 8 is journaled for rotation. A gear wheel 9 is loose on the shaft 8 but is adapted to be connected thereto by a clutch 10. The gear wheel 9 meshes into a smaller pinion 11 mounted on the shaft of the motor 6. A second gear wheel 12 is loose on the shaft 8 and is adapted to be connected thereby by a clutch 14. The gear wheel 12 meshes into a small pinion 15 mounted on a shaft 16 journaled in bearings 17 on the member 4. A-sprocket wheel 18 is secured to the shaft 16. and about the wheel 18. is trained a sprocket chain 19 engaged with a sprocket wheel 20 on the shaft of the electric motor 6.
The clutch 10 is operated'by' an arm 21 on the slide rod 22 mounted for reciprocation on the member 4 and connected by a link 23 to a lever 24 fulcrumed intermediate its ends, as at 25, on the member 4. A link 26 forms a connection between the lower end of the lever 24 and a slide rod 27 mounted for reciprocation in bearings 28 on the member 4. The slide rod 27 has a stop 29 which is adjustably held in place, the stop being adapted to cooperate with the bezifring 28 to limit the movement of the slide rod 27 to th left in Figure 4. The slide rod27 carries an adjustable arm 30 cooperating with the clutch 14. The outer end of the slide rod 27 is pivoted to a lever 31, fulcrumed at 32 on one end of the member 4 and ivoted to a link 33 which extends longitudinally .of the machine, the link being pivoted to a hand lever 34 fulcrumed at 35 on that end of the 0 member 4 which is remote from the end whereon the lever 31 is mounted.
Beveled pinions 36 are secured to the ends of the shaft 8 and mesh with horizontal beveled gears 37 journaled on securing elements or shafts 38 mounted in the upper portion of the pressure member 4, the parts 38 serving' to retain yokes 39 throughwhich the posts 2 pass slidably. Pinions40 are connected to the beveled gears '37 to rotate therewith, and mesh into gear wheels 41 engaging the threads 3 of the 'posts 2, the gear wheels 41 being held between the ends of the yokes 39 and the upper portion of the pressure member 4."
The posts 2 at one end of the machine are connected by a brace 42. Brackets 43, are mounted on the brace 42 on the base 1. The
I motion is transmitted to the clutch 14 by brackets 43 carry a controller 44, an ammeter 45 and a reversing switch 46, all of which are of standard construction, andneed not be described specifically. The brackets 43' support an upper inclined track 47. The
numeral 48 marks a fixed vertical track car ried by thebase of the machine or supported otherwise, the track 48 being provided adj acent to its lower end with an incline or cam 49. An automatic switch. 5O is'mounted on the upper hollow pressure member 4 and includes a movable element 51 adapted to cowayof the arm'30. From the slide rod 27, motion is transmitted to the clutch 10 by way of the link 26, the lever24, the link 23, the slide rod 22 and the arm 21. The construction is such thatthe clutch 14 may be employed to couple thegear wheel 12 to the shaft 8, or, at the will of an operator, the
clutch 10 may be employed to con le the 7 gear wheel 9 to the shaft 8. Two in ependent driving trains for the shaft 'S-are provided, one driving train embodying the wheel 20 on the shaft of the motor 6, the
n f 1 chain 19, the wheel 18, the shaft 16, the pinion 15 and the gear wheel 12; the other train embodying the pinion 11 on the shaft of the motor 6 and the gear wheel 9. These driving trains afiordmeans whereby the shaft 8 may be rotated at different speeds, thereby to operate the upper pressure member 4 at different speeds.
From the shaft 8, motion is transmitted by the beveled pinions 36' to the beveled gears 37, and by way of the pinions 40 to the gear wheels 41. Since the gear wheels 41 are held for rotation on the upper pressure member 4, and because the said gear wheels are threaded at 3 in the posts 2 of the base 1, it will be obvious that a means is provided whereby the pressure member 4 may be raised or lowered.
When the-pressure member 4 has moved downwardly to a predetermined point, the
element 52 of the switch 50, cooperating with the incline 49 of the track 48, will open I the circuit 53 and stop the motor 6. Similarly, the element 51 coacting with the incline 47 will move outwardly and cause the switch'50 to open the circuit 53, when the pressure member 4 has moved upwardly to a predetermined point. Through the instrumentality of the'reversing switch 46, the op erator may start the machine either. upwardly or downwardly at will.
What is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a base; posts carried thereby; a member movslidable on the posts; rotatable members threaded on the posts and held for rotation able toward and away from the base and base; posts carried thereby; a member movable toward and away from the base and slidable on the posts; rotatable members threaded on the posts and held for rotation on the first-specified member; a shaft journaled on the first-specified member; means for connecting the shaft operatively with the rotatable members; a motor on the firstspecified member; gear trains connected with the motor and adapted to operate the shaft at difi'erent speeds; and means for coupling the gear trains with the shaft, electrically, at the will of an operator.
3. In a device of the class described, a
base; posts carried thereby; a member movable toward and away from the base and slidable on the posts gear wheels threaded on the posts and id for rotation on the first-specified member';. a pinion forming a connection betwebn the gear wheels; a beveled' ear mounte d to rotate "with the last speci ed inion; a shaft journaled on the first-speci ed member; a beveled pinion carried by the shaft and meshing with the beveled gear; a motor on the first-specified member; gearings connected with the motor and constructed to operate the shaft at different speeds; and means for connecting the gearings selectively with the shaft, at the will of an operator. In a device of the class described a base; posts carried thereby; a member movable toward and away from the base and slidable on the posts; rotatable members threaded on the, posts and held for rotation on the first-specified, member; a shaft journaled on the first-specified'member; a motor on the first-specified member; ear wheelsloose on the shaft; clutches un er the control of an operator and constituting means for connecting the gear wheels one at a time with the shaft; a second shaft journaled on the first-specified member; pinions carried by the second shaft and by the motor and meshing with the gear wheels; sprocketv emma wheels carried by the motor and by the second shaft; and a sprocket chain forming a connection between the sprocket wheels.

In a device of the class described, a base; posts carried thereby; a member movable toward and away from the base and slidable on the posts; rotatable members threaded on the posts and held for rotation on the pressure member; a shaft journaled on the first-specified member; means for connecting the shaft operatively with the rotatable members; a motor carried by the first-specified member; differential speed connections between the motor and the shaft; clutches uniting said speed connections, one at a time, with the shaft; slides mounted for reciprocation on the first-specified member; connections between the slides and the clutches; a lever fulcrumed on the first-specified member; connections between the lever and the slides; and means under the control of an operator for actuating the slides.

In a device of the class described, a base; posts carried thereby; a member movable toward and away from the base and slidable on the posts; an electric motor on the first-specified member; means for connecting the motor operatively with the rotatable members; a circuit including the motor; a reversing swltch under the control of an operator and interposed in said circuit; an automatic switch carried by the firstspecified member and interposed in said circuit; and relatively fixed members wherewith the automatic switch cooperates to 0 en the said circuit, when the first-speci ed member approaches the limits of its travel.
