Abstract

162,383. Heath, A. R. N., and Hall, Ltd., J. & E. Jan. 27, 1920. Controlling variable-speed gearing.-Relates to control mechanism of the kind having a rod G passing into the gear-box which rod is turned and slid longitudinally to effect selection and operation by a lever, such as A, movable in two directions at right-angles. This lever A is in two parts, one of which moves in the two directicns and the other in one direction only. The hand portion A turns about a pivot a in a boss c secured to a transverse spindle b. The portion d<2> which has one movement only is in two parts secured to the spindle b and gripping between them a ball g on the end of the rod G. This portion d<2> slides the rod G when the lever A is moved in the plane of the paper, Fig. 2. The turning of the rod G is effected by an extension A' of the lever A beyond the pivot a, such exten. sion A<1> having a ball end a<2> engaging an arcuate groove k in the upper end of a lever k2 extending from the rod G. Such turning of the rod G is effected by moving the lever A in the plane of the paper, Fig. 1. The mechanism is principally intended for use on motor road vehicles.
