Abstract

606,454. Controlling change-speed gears. SINGER MOTORS, Ltd., and SHORTER, L. J. Jan. 15, 1946, No. 1319. [Class 80 (ii)] Three parallel selector-rods 20, 21, 22, controlling a four-speed and reverse gear, slide side-by-side in a flat U-shaped bracket 26 bolted to the underside of a detachable top cover-plate 14 of the main gear-casing 12, and have slots 29 for actuation by a cranked arm 30 on a selector shaft 31, which can slide and turn in a sleeve 38 also carried in the cover plate. The other end of the sleeve 38 carries a ball-mounted shift-lever 34 engaging a cranked arm 33 on the other end of the selector shaft 31 for turning and sliding the latter. The entire selector mechanism can therefore be removed by removing the cover plate 14. In its turning movement, during which the arm 30 selects amongst the three shift-rods 20-22, the arm 30 of the selector shaft 29 also turns an interlock 44 which cannot move axially and has spaced side cheeks 45, 46 which lock the appropriate two shift-rods in neutral whilst the selected remaining rod is moved axially to a gear position by axial movement of the selector shaft 31. A spring-plunger 51 opposes turning movement of the selector shaft in the direction to engage the reverse shift-rod 20, and detent-plungers 55 locate the shift-rods in gear and neutral positions. The shift-rods 21, 22 are identical, having detent notches 58 at both ends to permit them to be used with their shift-forks 16, 19 at opposite ends. The reverse shift-rod 20 is connected by a link 17 with its shift-fork. Specification 601,433 is referred to.
