Abstract
1416888 Change speed control; controlling positive clutches G A BEWLEY 30 Aug 1973 [30 Aug 1972] 40113/72 Headings F2C F2D and F2L A two-speed gear-box suitable for grass track racing motor cycles has a pair of gears 4, 5 freely rotatable on a main shaft (not shown), a sliding dog clutch member 6 splined to the shaft and axially movable between positions of engagement with the gears by selector means 10, 11 biased, e.g. by a spring 20, to change ratio in one direction only, and trip means 13 to release the selector means. A lay shaft (not shown) has a pair of gears in constant mesh with the gears 4, 5 whereby low ratio through the lay shaft is obtained when the member 6 is engaged with the gear 4, and direct drive from the main shaft to the gear 5 is established when the latter is engaged by the member 6. Upshift is effected by the spring 20 on release of the trip means by a Bowden cable 18 connected to a handle bar control, and downshift by clockwise movement of a gear lever 14 welded to the member 11. Fig. 2 shows the selector means in the intermediate neutral position. The mating dog clutch projections 22, 23, 24, 25 are shaped as shown in Fig. 4 to promote disengagement of the member 6 from the gear 4 and its engagement with the gear 5. Preferably the trailing edges of the projections 22, 23 are also shaped to promote disengagement on overrun. One of the main shaft gears and the meshing lay shaft gear may be readily replaceable to change the low ratio.
