Abstract

713,632. Variable-ratio-gear selecting mechanism. FOWLER & CO. (LEEDS), Ltd., J. Feb. 19, 1951 [March 10, 1950], No. 6032/50. Class 80 (2) A bifurcated member 13 is arranged to lock the selector member 8 of a stepped-ratio gear in neutral or gear-engaged positions and is continuously urged about trunnions 11, toward the neutral position shown in Fig. 1 by a torsion spring 18, Fig. 2. A gear lever 1 is movable in a gate 2, Fig. 6, to selectively engage a lower extension 6 with one of the selector members 8 which is then movable by the gear lever 1 to establish a gear ratio. Each member 8 has a slot 17 which is engaged by one limb of the member 13 in the neutral position and is thereby locked. The member 13 is pivoted about its trunnions 11 when the lever 1 is moved in the neutral slot of the gate 2 unlocking the selected member 8 for sliding between the limbs of the member 13 whilst leaving the other selector members locked. Further slots 17a in the members 8 receive the fork 13 to lock the members in their "gearengaged positions." A control member 19 for a separate forward and reverse gear train may be interlocked, by a blade 20 engaging slots 21 in extensions 22 of the members 8, with the control member 1 to prevent some or all of the ratios from operating in one position of the separate gear. In a similar arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown). the selector members are interconnected with a clutch control whereby the gear changes can only be effected when the clutch is disengaged.
