Controlling variable-speed gearing.-The invention relates to locking-means for shift-rods, and is particularly applicable to the gear-shifting mechanism described in Specification 326,945. The shift rods 10, 10<1>, operated by rods 16, 16', are provided with complementary recesses 22, 23, 24 and 22<1>, 23<1>, 24<1> engaged by balls or similar members 25 when the latter are separated by the tapered end 27 of a slide block 28. The central recesses 23, 23<1> correspond to the neutral position of the gears. The member 28 is biased into the position shown by a spring 30 compressed between a collar 29 on the block and a lug 31, and is withdrawn to free the balls by a pivoted lever 36 with an overhanging lug 37 engaged by a rod 33<1> connected to a member operating the clutch. An additional locking-means is provided by a drift-block 20 located in a recess 21 and cooperating with circumferential grooves 19 on the rods 10, 10', so that when one rod is moved from the neutral position the other rod is locked against movement.
