Abstract
650,566. Controlling variable-speed gearing. PARKINSON, R. M. Feb. 12, 1948, No. 4088. [Class 80(ii)] A pre-selector and actuating mechanism for change-speed gears comprises a plunger-like member 30 on a shaft 39 which is rotated to select a gear ratio and moved axially to engage the gear selected. The plunger 30 co-operates with sliding rods 11-14 corresponding to the various ratios and arranged around the wall of a cylindrical member 20. These rods have cut away portions at their upper ends to form shoulders 31 adapted to be engaged by a flange of the plunger on its downward movement to be moved to neutral position. The plunger is provided with a series of radially projecting pins 33-36 one of which is adapted to engage in a notch 32 of a corresponding rod 11-14 when the plunger is rotated to select a gear and then moved downwards, the pin, such as 33, riding over the shoulder 31 of the selected rod against spring pressure and dropping into the notch 32. Subsequent upward movement of the plunger 30 by a spring 43 will then carry the selected rod 11 with it to operate the gear shift through a rocking lever 25, 28. The rotation of the plunger 30 and its shaft 39 is effected by a selector control lever 41 and its axial movement is effected through a bellcrank lever 56 by, for example, the clutch pedal 49, Fig. 6, of the vehicle. A lost-motion connection 53, 54 is provided in this case so that on depression of the pedal the clutch is first disengaged and the plunger 30 then moved downward to place any previous gear in neutral, and, on release of the clutch pedal the selected gear is first engaged and the clutch then re-engaged. The axial gear engaging and disengaging movement of the plunger may be effected by fluid-pressure or suction on a piston under control of a valve connected to the clutch pedal.
