Abstract

127,527. Collier, A. T. Jan. 18, 1919. Controlling variable-speed and reversing gearing.-Relates to a gate change system for controlling variable-speed and reversing gearing of the type described in Specifications 114,865 and 115,175, and consists of an arrangement whereby no change can be effected until the control levers are first brought to a neutral position. The control-levers a, b are pivoted upon a pin c, and, at the upper end, each is provided with a U-shaped member f adapted to be engaged by blocks g on the operating-lever h. The lever h is adapted to slide in slots n, j, m, Fig. 3, in an upper plate i and to move. in a wide slot in a lower plate d, which has slots k with retaining-recesses to guide the levers a, b. The arrangement is such that, when in a neutral position, the blocks g can engage both or either of the members f on the levers a., b, and the lever h can be moved in the appropriate slot to affect the change of speed. No further change can be made until the levers are first restored to the neutral position. For reversal, a separate control lever o, pivoted on the pin c and moving in a slot in the upper plate and in a notched retaining-slot q in the lower plate, is provided. A locking-plate s with notched slots is pivoted to the lower plate, and one of the notches is positioned so as to lock the lever n unless the levers a, b, h are in the neutral position. When the levers are in this position, the lever o can be moved to the end of its slot, and, in this movement, it shifts the locking-plate so as to uncover a slot and allow the lever a to be moved to operate the reverse.
