Abstract

634,897. Change-speed control. STANDARD MOTOR CO., Ltd., GRINHAM, E. G., and TURNER, W. R. Nov. 5, 1947, No. 29469. [Class 80 (ii)] Rockshafts 1, 2, journalled in a motor-vehicle change-speed gear case 3 and actuating sliding shiftforks 38, Fig. 10, of first reverse and second high speeds, are remotely operated through shafts 5, 6, Fig. 4, flexibly coupled to them at one end 4, and universally mounted on the vehicle frame 12 in spherical bearings 13 at their other ends, so that rocking movement of the change-speed gear with the associated rubber-mounted power-plant does not affect actuating-arms 10, 11, secured to the shafts 5, 6 near the frame-bearings 13. The selector rock-shafts 1, 2 are interlocked by a drift-pin 44, Fig. 10, and are operated selectively by a hand shift-lever 35, ball mounted on the vehicle steering- column 16, and operating an angularly and axially movable shaft 15, fast on the lower end of which is a driving clutch-dog 27, engageable selectively by axial movement, possible in the neutral position only, with either of two freely-mounted driven clutch-dogs 18, 19, moved angularly by turning movement of the shaft 15 to operate the striker rock-shafts 1, 2 through arms 20, 21, Fig. 4, on the dogs, links 22, 23 and the arms 10, 11 on the shafts 5, 6. The hand-lever 35 actuates the shaft 15 by engagement of its hollow end with the cranked end 37, Fig. 3, of the shaft, which latter is biased upwardly to the second high speed plane by a coil-spring recessed in the driving clutch-dog 27. To cushion axial engaging movement rubber plugs (Fig. 6, not shown) are inset in the faces of the driving clutch-dog 27, and the links 22, 23 may be rubber-bushed. A reverse light switch 50 is operated by an abutment 51 on the lower clutchdog 19, and the shift-forks 38 are located in gear and neutral positions on the fixed rod 39 on which they slide by the usual spring-loaded detents carried by the forks and engaging grooves 40 in the rod.
