Abstract

1,080,593. Change-speed control. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 24, 1964 [March 1, 1963], No. 8394/63. Addition to 950,217. Heading F2D. In a vehicle having an automatic changespeed gear and a carburetter-throttle valve which is automatically actuated during ratio shift, the throttle valve is closed to a greater extent during upshift than during downshift. As shown, the throttle valve is a butterfly valve having a spindle 11 fast with an arm 14 carrying a pin 17 which is urged by a spring 24 against a lever 19 which is linked to the usual accelerator pedal. The arm 14 is connected by a link 16 to a lever 40 rotatable on a spindle 37. The automatic change-speed gear is provided with a shaft 25 which is automatically rotated when conditions arise necessitating a shift, the shaft 25 carrying a cam 26 engaged by a follower roller mounted, with some play permitted by a slot, on an arm 31 pivoted at 32 and fast with an arm 33 which is connected by a link 35 to a three-armed lever 36, 39, 41 pivoted on the spindle 37. Normally the follower roller is in a recess of the cam 26 and arm 41 is clear of the lever 40, permitting actuation of the butterfly valve by the accelerator 22 throughout its full range. When upshift is to occur, the shaft 25 is rotated anticlockwise, the follower roller moving to the left-hand end of the slot and riding out of the cam recess, thereby imparting sufficient anticlockwise movement to the three armed lever for the arm 41 to engage the lever 40 and move it clockwise, thus moving the butterfly valve towards its closed position, the spring 24 being tensioned to permit this movement with the accelerator pedal stationary. During downshift the cam 26 is rotated clockwise so that the follower roller is brought to the right-hand end of its slot so that a smaller closing movement is imparted to the butterfly valve than for upshift.
