Abstract

810,895. Change-speed control; gearing for stopping and starting machinery. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. June 5, 1957 [Feb. 19, 1957], No. 5641/57. Class 80 (2). To control the setting of a motorcar engine throttle during a ratio shift, a switch 23 on a steering- column-mounted ratio-shift lever 11 is closed when the lever is operated, to energize a solenoid 29 which conditions a valve 27 to connect an engine inlet manifold depression reservoir 21 to a servomotor 13 disengaging a main, centrifugally engaged, clutch and to a servomotor 25 which acts through linkwork described below to close the throttle, a drag-ring switch 24 in the main clutch closing when the driven clutch member overruns the driving clutch member to energize a solenoid 31 and condition a valve 28 to connect the vacuum reservoir 21 to a second servomotor 26 which opens the engine throttle by overriding the servomotor 25. Depression of the accelerator pedal turns a shaft 16 connected through a resiliently expansible link 38 to an arm 39 freely rotatable on a spinble 18 connected to the throttle valve. A projection 44 on the arm 39 engages a projection 42 on an arm 41 fast with the throttle spindle 18. The servomotor 25 is connected by a rod 47 to an arm 45, freely rotatable on the throttle spindle 18 and having a projection 46 which can engage with the arm 39. The servomotor 26 is connected to an arm 48 freely rotatable on the throttle spindle 18 and engaging at its end with a second projection 43 on the arm 41 fast with the throttle spindle. Springs within the servomotors 25, 26 and stops (not shown) hold the parts. in the position shown when the valves 27, 28 are not conditioned to connect the servomotors to the vacuum reservoir, the throttle spindle 18 then being movable between its fully closed and fully opened positions, without expansion of the resilient link 38, by turning the accelerator pedal shaft 16. When a ratio shift is initiated, the servomotor 25 is connected to the vacuum reservoir 21 and pulls the arm 45 down to engage the projection 46 with the arm 39 which turns, expanding the resilient link 38 without moving the accelerator pedal, and allows the throttle valve to be moved towards its closed position by its spring. If the driven member of the main clutch overrides the driving member, the drag-ring switch 24 closes and connects the servomotor 26 to the vacuum reservoir 21, so that the arm 48 is turned to engage its end with the projection 43 and thus turn the arm 41 fast on the throttle spindle 18 in the throttle opening direction. Figs. 4-7 (not shown) illustrate a preferred embodiment of a control unit having arms and links, &c., arranged as shown diagrammatically in Fig. 3.
