Abstract

372,150. Controlling motor vehicle clutches. JANDER, H., 51, Emdenerstrasse,- Berlin. July 3, 1931, No. 19206. Convention date, July 4, 1930. Addition to 371,923. [Class 79 (v).] The clutch of a motor vehicle is operated by a servo-motor controlled by the accelerator and by means responsive to the engine speed as described in the parent Specification ; according to the present invention the vacuum created in the inlet or induction pipe of the engine is used as the speed-responsive means, thecontrol means of the servo-motor being operated by an electromagnet so arranged that when a switch controlled by the accelerator is closed the servomotor is not connected to the induction pipe, i.e. the clutch is not disengaged, until the vacuum is reduced to the degree that corresponds to a predetermined low engine speed. In the construction shown the clutch pedal 1 is depressed to disengage the clutch by a servomotor 7 having a vane or piston 8 and two chambers 9, 10, the chamber 10 being always open to the atmosphere at 11 and the chamber 9 being adapted to be connected either to the atmosphere at 16 or to the induction pipe 15 by a rocking valve 22, 23. The atmosphere inlet 16 is formed as a magnet having two coils 25a, 26, the circuit of coil 25a being made from battery 29 through switch 28, wire 30 and switch 31 controlled by the accelerator pedal 21. When the accelerator pedal is released to close the throttle 17 the switch 31 is closed and the coil 25a is energized. This coil is so arranged that the magnet 16 is not sufficiently powerful to attract the valve 23 against the suction on the valve 22 until the speed of the engine is reduced to a predetermined idling speed. Thus, even when the accelerator is released, the clutch is not disengaged until the engine slows down to the idling speed. The effect of the coil 25a may be varied by using an adjustable spring on the valves 22, 23, by altering the number of turns on the coil, or by varying the position of the coil of the magnet 16 relatively to the valve 23. The clutch may be disengaged at any time during change of gear by means of a gripping lever 34 on the gear lever 35. The gripping lever 34 carries contacts 33, 38 adapted to be earthed at 36, 39 and so complete the circuits of both coils 25a, 26, so that the valve 23 is closed and 22 is opened to disengage the clutch, whenever the lever 34 is gripped.
