Abstract

387,625. Controlling motor vehicles. RENAULT, L., 8, Avenue Emile Zola, Billancourt, Seine, France. Sept. 27, 1932, No. 26832. Convention date, Oct. 29, 1931. [Class 79 (v).] A free-wheeling device is adapted to be locked by application of the brake-pedal so as to utilize engine-braking. The brake-pedal, when depressed, first opens the throttle, and then displaces a lever which engages a positive clutch between the engine and the wheels and simultaneously re-closes the throttle. In the form shown in Fig. 1, depression of the brakepedal 1 first causes a cam 3 to displace the lever 5, thus pulling a cord 8 and pulley 9 to the right and opening the throttle 15 ; further depression of the pedal causes the cam 4 to act on a bell-crank lever 21 thus pulling a rod 22, opening a valve 23, admitting suction from the induction pipe to a cylinder 26, rocking the lever 11 about its pivot 11a, and engaging the positive clutch 12. The movement of the lever 11 allows the pulley 9 to move back to the left and the throttle to close again. Alternatively the cam 4 may make the circuit of an electromagnet which rocks the lever 11, or the cam may act through a bell crank connected to the upper run of the cord 8. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the throttle is opened by the small cam 3 acting on a lever 5 which is held in the open position of the throttle by a detent 33 until the cylinder 26 rocks the lever 11 thus rocking a lever 37 and pulling a cord 36, which pulls the tail 35 of the detent and disengages it. In the form shown in Fig. 5 the cam 3 makes a contact 42 thus energizing a magnet 43, which opens the throttle. The cam 4 then makes a contact 44, thus energizing a magnet 45, which rocks the lever 11 and engages the clutch. The movement of the lever 11 rotates a lever 47 which opens a switch 48 in the circuit of the magnet 43, thus allowing the throttle to reclose. In a further form, Fig. 6 (not shown), the electromagnets 43, 45 are replaced by vacuum cylinders operated from the induction pipe, and the contacts 42, 44 and switch 48 by valves.
