266,945. Harris & Sheldon, Ltd., and Nelson, A. D. May 13, 1926. Controlling variable-speed gearing for motor vehicles. A reverse stop R closing the reverse slot N in a gate G is moved out of the way of the gear lever 5 by a hand lever (not shown), or by pressing the foot sideways upon a plate 10. As the stop R slides under the gate a lever 11 pivoted upon the gate is advanced over the slot M of the first forward speed at the other end of the gate, as shown in Fig. 1. On the control lever being moved into the slot M, the lever 11 is struck and returns the stop R automatically to its obstructive position. A modification is described in which the lever 11 is advanced over a speed slot at the same end of the gate as the reverse slot. In a further modification, the lever 11 carries a spring dog adapted to extend into the centre of the gate, which is operatively struck when the control lever is moved into neutral. Modifications are described in which the reverse stop R pivots laterally into and out of obstructive position. In an arrangement shown in Fig. 12. the reverse stop R pivots upwards from the gate G when raised by a hand-lever 33. The stop is folded down to operative position when a lever 37 at the other end of the gate is struck by the control lever (not shown).
