Abstract

473,972. Controlling change-speed gearing. KREMER, M. DE. April 22, 1936, No. 11513. [Class 80 (ii)] Relates to selector shift mechanism for vehicle changespeed gearing in which shift rods 1, 2, 3, Fig. 1, are movable in both directions to gear positions from neutral by a double-armed striker lever 13, Fig. 2, which is moved by a selector control so that its upper arm 13a or its lower arm 13b may engage upper and lower jaws 9b, 10b, Fig. 3, of the same shift rod selectively so that a rocking :of the lever 13 in one and the same direction on release of the clutch pedal will throw the shift rod in one direction or the other according to the arm of the lever engaged. Each shift rod carries an upper jaw such as 9b and a lower jaw such as 10b, and, in the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, these jaws are staggered so that the lever 13 may be straight and be clear of one jaw when it engages the other. These upper and lower jaw pairs 9a, 10a, 9b, 10b, 9c, 10c have an end opening between them and these openings are in line so as to form collectively a passage P, Fig. 2, along which a connecting member 14 may pass, which member connects to the selector gear. This connecting member 14 may be an arm sliding on a guide 15, Fig. 1, under control from a push-pull cable 16. Thus, the lever 13 has six operative selective positions, as is clear from Fig. 3. The lever 13 is slidably splined on a rock-shaft 12 which is rocked always in the same direction during the return idle stroke of the clutch pedal prior to clutch engagement, such pedal having a lost-motion connection with a lever 17 fast on the shaft 12. In a modified arrangement, the upper and lower jaws such as 9b, 10b of each selector bar are in the same plane, as shown in Fig. 8, and the arms 13a, 13b of the lever 13 are staggered. The jaws 9b, 10b, &c. are carried about the middle of each shift rod 2 &c., as shown in Fig. 6, and the connecting member 14 which moves in the passage P is adapted to be turned about a pivot selector arbor 28 in the top of the gear case.
