Controlling variable-speed gearing.-A control lever a is adapted by its lateral or selective movement in a gate p to disengage the main clutch c, to facilitate change. Thus when the lever a is displaced to the left, it strikes directly a swing- ing frame d, the displacement of which through lever h disengages the clutch c. When the lever a is moved laterally the other way, it strikes the upper edge of a medially pivoted plate lever e, which rocks so as to displace the frame d to the left as before. At the end of the gearchanging movement of the lever a, up or down of Fig. 2, the spring of the clutch c reasserts itself to engage the clutch and thrust the lever a back laterally, so that the lever a becomes locked in one of a number of notches s in the middle web of the gate.
