Abstract

312,788. Veloce, Ltd., Goodman, P. J., and Willis, H. J. May 17, 1928. Controlling variable-speed gearing.-In order to impart definite displacements to a gear control lever d upon a motor-cycle by the foot of the rider, repeated oscillations are given to a pedal-lever b, Fig. 1, which is connected to the lever d through ratchets. The lever b has a boss f, Fig. 4, with a pin t projecting between segmental strips s acted on by springs p. the effect being that no matter whether the lever b is moved up or down from neutral, the springs p return it to neutral with pin t in line with a stop n on a fixed bracket a. The boss f also carries in a different plane two oppositelyacting spring-pressed pawls e, Fig. 3, adapted to engage ratchet teeth h formed inside the annular boss i of gear lever d. The lever b has a ball end c which can be engaged either above or below by the rider's foot. When lever b is moved downwards from neutral, pawl e on the left engages and moves lever d downwards one step. Pawl e on the right is held inoperative by a cam k held by a projection m. Lever b is returned by springs p, and a second depression of lever b moves lever d a second definite step downwards, and so on. When lever b is moved upwards from neutral, the pawl e on the right acts to move lever d one definite step upwards, the pawl e on the left being held inoperative by the cam k. A second upward oscillation of the foot lever brings the lever d back to its original position, and so on.
