Abstract

486,144. Controlling change-speed gearing. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd., PAGE, V., and PERKINS, H. Feb. 8, 1937, No. 3658. [Class 80 (ii)] Relates to change-speed selector-control, particularly for a motor-cycle, of the kind in which repeated strokes, in either direction, of a foot-operated lever 6 actuate oppositely acting pawls 11, producing corresponding stepwise displacements of a ratchet-toothed plate 14. In such an arrangement, the ratchetplate 14 is riveted to a toothed quadrant 15, meshing with a pinion on the change-speed selector cam-shaft 18, and having notches 19 engaged by a spring-detent 20 for locking the plate in gear and neutral positions. The ratchet-plate 14 and attached speed-selecting quadrant 15 are fast to a rock-shaft 2, on which are loosely mounted a plate 10 carrying the two pawls 11, and a sleeve 4 rigidly carrying the foot-lever 6 and a plate 7 having an axiallyprojecting lug 8 which, on initial movement of the foot-lever, presses on the tail 11a of one of the pawls, moving it into engagement with the ratchet-plate 14, whereafter continued movement of the foot-lever takes along the pawlcarrier 10 and the ratchet-plate 14 one step to effect a speed-change, the movement being limited by the plate 7 striking one of two fixed stops 9. After a change, the pawl -carrier 10 is returned to the central position, taking with it the foot-lever 6, under the influence of a torsion spring 22, the crossed legs of which engage either side of a pin 25 on the pawl-carrier 10 and a fixed peg 23 passing through a slot in the plate 7. The pawls 11 are lifted clear of the ratchetplate 14 by a coil-spring 26 between their tails 11a. Gear and neutral positions are indicated by a pointer 29, secured to the rock-shaft 2, neutral being indicated when the pointer 29 faces the projecting end of the peg 23. To adapt the mechanism for hand-control, the ratchet-plate and quadrant 14, 15 are replaced by a simple toothed quadrant having a squared boss for direct connection of a lever linked to a hand control-lever.
