Abstract

Variable-speed gearing for vehicles comprises a double clutch 15, Fig. 1, which is held in its extreme engaging positions by a ' throw-over ' spring 39, Fig. 3, and means 42 for locking the clutch 15 in neutral, which is released bv a selective movement of a control lever 20. When the lever 20 is moved to operate gear elements other than the clutch 15, it slides in a slot in a fork 46 which is connected through a spindle 43 to the locking-device 42, which is therefore not moved. Such other gear element may be a gear 28 sliding in the driven shaft adapted to produce lowest speed and reversed drive. The clutch 15 produces a direct drive from driving-shaft 3 and also middle speed. When the clutch 15 is to be moved, lever 20 is moved on its ball support 21 in the plane of Fig. 3 so as to bring its terminal fork 22 into engagement with a knob 32a on a lever 32. This turns fork 46 and spindle 43 so as to move the locking -device 42 from the locked position shown in Fig. 4 to the unlocked position shown in Fig. 5. The member thus locked is the lever 41, which is acted on toggle-wise by spring 39 to throw over the clutch 15. This throw-over can now be started from control lever 20 through linkage 32, 31, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37. A modification is described in which there are two double-clutches and two throw-over levers 41<a>, 55, Fig. 8, controlled by a double locking device 42<a>.
