Controlling variable-speed gearing.-The control lever h<1> of a change-speed or reversing gear is kept locked by a pin i so long as a gear c of the change-speed gearing is rotating. Thus it is necessary to disconnect the gearing from the engine, or to stop a vehicle fitted with the device, before the lever can be moved to throw in, say, the reverse. The pin i is secured in the boss i' of a gear i<2> constantly meshing with the gear c. The gear i<2> turns loosely upon a spigot j secured to a fixed frame k. A bush l also loose on the spigot i is connected by spring pins o<1> to a handwheel o so as to grip by friction a collar on the spigot. A pin m projects from the gear i<2> into a helical slot n in the bush l. Since the bush is caused by friction to lag behind, the effect of the wheel c being in motion is to cause the gear i<2> to screw to the right, causing the pin i to engage a hole h<3> in the lever h<1>, or at least to project into the path of that lever to prevent it from being thrown over.
