Abstract

198,142. Raleigh Cycle Co., Ltd., and Wilkie, W. March 28, 1922. Variable-speed gearing of the countershaft type is fitted with a reversing-train comprising a kick starter wheel C or similar wheel loose upon a separate lay axle E. The kick starter pinion A meshing with the wheel C is secured to the main shaft B of the gearing. By the side of the wheel C and loose on the axle E is a reverse-gear wheel F, which constantly meshes with a gear G on the lay-shaft H of the gearing. When the change-speed gear is in neutral, the wheel F can be clutched to the wheel C to effect reversed driving. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the axle E has a screwing motion by a pin E<1> and inclined slot J<1>. An inclined projection O is stopped by an arm N, Fig. 1, on the control shaft M<1> except when the gearing is in neutral. The kick starter lever is shown at D and the reverse-gear operating lever at K.
