Abstract
192,895. Downs, N. T., and Dyke, C. H. Jan. 17, 1922. Variable-speed gearing suitable for motor-cycles comprises a double clutch d, Fig. 1, slidably splined on the main or driving-shaft a and a pair of sleeve-coupled gears g<1>, g<2> loose and slidable upon a lay shaft f. For the high speed, the clutch d is slid into engagement with a clutch face on a driven gear c. For the middle speed, the clutch d is slid into engagement with a loose gear e to bring in the train e, g<1>, g<2>, c. For the low speed, the pair g<1>, g<2> is slid into clutch engagement with a loose gear i constantly driven from a pinion h fast on the shaft a. The train h, i, g<2>, c then acts. Operation is effected by forks m, n, Fig. 2, having bearing sleeves surrounding a controlling cam-shaft o as described in Specification 182,719. The shaft o is retained in proper positions by a spring bolt q<1> engaging recesses in a disc q. A kick starter k, Fig. 1, may be arranged to act through the gear i.
