370,735. Change-speed g e a ing. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES., Untert³rkheim, Stuttgart, Germany. June 15, 1931, No. 17294. Convention date, June 13, 1930. [Class 80 (ii).] Change-speed gearing especially for vehicles comprises between an engine shaft 1 and a tail shaft 7 a set A of shiftable gears on the engine-shaft side, and a set B of at least two pairs of constant-mesh helical gears on the tailshaft side. A double clutch 25 on the shaft 7 is adapted to be thrown over quickly without a neutral position between loose helical gears 23, 24. The gears of the set A are thus in motion driven from the shaft 7 during a speed change, which facilitates the change. Either the pair 21, 23 or the pair 22, 24 may act as the constant-mesh return-drive pair for the countershaft drives of the set A, there being a single through countershaft 9 with gears 21, 22, 13, 14, 15 fast upon it. The main shaft is in three sections 4, 8, 7, the middle section 8 being hollow, supported at both ends, and carrying fast upon it the gear 23 which belongs to both transmission sets A, B. A direct clutch drive through the hollow shaft 8 is the second highest speed, the highest being an overdrive through the silent constant-mesh train.
