Abstract

281,731. Hohenzollern Akt.-Ges. f³r Lokomotibau. Dec. 6, 1926, [Convention date]. Variable-speed gearing yielding equal speeds in opposite directions comprises a number of parallel countershafts and loose gears such as 11, Fig. 1, which together with their friction clutches 13 are overhung upon their bearings 54. Since intermediate speeds are obtainable by allowing slip in the clutches, the invention is suitable for driving locomotives. The two-speed gear shown in the lower part of Fig. 1 is combined with the two speed gear shown in the upper part. A cross shaft 7 is driven in either direction from a shaft 2 through a bevel reversing- gear 3, 4, 5, 6. The shaft 7 carries two fast gears 8, 9 which drive four loose clutch gears 11, 12, 21, 22. A shaft 10 is driven at two speeds according as clutch 13 or clutch 14 is actuated. The shaft 10 is constantly connected through divided pair 17, 31 and 18, 32 to shaft 30, which is constantly geared through a pair 33, 41 to driven shaft 40. A shaft 20 is driven at two different speeds according as clutch 23 or clutch 24 is actuated. This shaft is constantlv connected through a gear 27 and gear 33 acting as an idler to gear 41 and shaft 40. Thus shaft 40 is driven at four speeds in either direction. By the omission of parts, three speeds only are obtained. A modification doubling the number of speeds in each direction is shown in Fig. 3. The shafts a<1>, a<2> of two Diesel engines are geared together through a sleeve o, and by means of bevel gears shown and clutches e<1>, e<2>, a shaft f is driven in either direction. A parallel countershaft 7 is geared permanently to two loose overhung gears k, l on the shaft f. By actuating clutches h, i alternatively, the shaft 7 can be driven at either of two speeds. This shaft 7 carries fixed pinions 8, 9 and takes the place of the first transverse pinion shaft 7 in the arrangement shown in Fig. 1.
