Abstract

264,315. Peters, J. A. Jan. 8, 1926. Variable-speed gearing of the kind in which four speeds are effected by the use of six toothed wheels on parallel shafts comprises gears C, D on the middle shaft secured together as usual. The gears on at least one of the other shafts, such as the gears E, F, are loose on their shaft O and have dog-ends J, L adapted to be engaged in turn with dogs K on the shaft when these gears are moved in unison in changing speed. In the arrangement shown, loose dog-ended gears B, A upon the engine shaft M and a clutch sleeve P upon it do not themselves move, but are engaged singly by a movable double clutch H splined on the sleeve P between them. A main friction clutch R, T adapted to connect the sleeve P to the engine shaft M is arranged outside the gear casing Z which may be integral with a crank-case Z<1>. The gears E, F are coupled and moved by a double fork 15 and the clutch H by a single fork 17, these forks sliding on guides 16, 22 and being engaged by levers 18, 19 respectively. A slidable control shaft 20 carries a key 21 which may engage the lever 18 for moving the fork 15 only, or may be engaged with both levers 18, 19 for moving both forks together. The gears A, B may also be coupled together and slid relatively to a clutch member fast on the sleeve P. A starter is shown at 14.
