Abstract

148,273. Desmoulins, E. July 19, 1919, [Convention date]. Motor power plant.-Relates to a combination of reciprocating internal-combustion engines, the members of the combination differing in power and acting separately or together, and is chiefly applicable to automobiles. A<1> and A<2> are internal-combustion engines, the former of low power and the latter of high power. Each operates an independent shaft a<1> and a<2>. The engine A<1> actuates a clutch member b<1>, the other member d<10> of which is carried by a sleeve f<1> on the main shaft c. The other end of this sleeve carries the central pinion f of an epicyclic gear shown. The planet-pinions g of this gearing are carried by a sleeve h on the sleeve f<1>. The engine A<2> actuates, similarly to the engine A<1>, a sleeve j<2> on the sleeve h, and the sleeve j<2> carries the annular pinion j of the epicyclic gear. The gears f, g carry one clutch member i, the other member k being mounted on a sleeve splined on the shaft c. The member k is also a member of an outer clutch, the other member k<0> of which slides on the sleeve last-mentioned. The member k<0> is in slidable connexion with the gear j. All the clutches are acted on by springs which tend to keep them in operative engagement. The engine clutches are operated by a lever s by which either or both engines can be put in gear. The remaining clutches are actuated by foot levers t and v, which also actuate brakes n and m respectively. A third brake l is actuated by a foot-lever x. By means of the epicyclic gearing, and by using either engine separately, or both together, five different speeds may be obtained. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also a modification wherein the shafts a<1>, a<2> are parallel instead of co-axial, and it is stated that change-speed mechanism of the kind described in Specification 148,272, [Class 80 (ii), Gearing, Variable-speed &c.], may be used with the invention. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
