Abstract
164,035. Snow, C. S. H., Jones, R. H. E., and Hast, C. A. Oct. 9, 1919. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing of the kind comprising a number of internally toothed rings adapted to be held alternatively by brakes is controlled by a sliding cam bar or a revoluble cam shaft in such a way that the gear cannot be changed until the engine clutch is disengaged. Such rings f<1>, g', h', Fig. 1, are acted on by band brakes f<2>, g<2>, h<2>, which are pressed into action by springs 8 when a notch n<1>, Fig. 2, in a sliding bar n is brought into the plane of the brake. The locking is effected by a screw stop x connected by a crank 6 and link 7 to a pedal which operates the engine clutch v. The bar n is operated by a lever 5, Fig. 4, sliding in a gate ' r. A revoluble cam bar 14, Fig. 5, is employed alternatively, and is locked by a stop pin x<4> engaging a notched disc 21. The gearing may comprise a triple sungear b, Fig. 1, secured to a driving- shaft a. The planet gears f, g, and h of three separate trains connecting the sun-gears b to the rings f<1>, g<1>, h<1> are supported on discs j, k, l, and m, which are coupled together, the disc being secured to a driven shaft o. A dog clutch for connecting the disc j to the gear b for direct driving is connected by an arm p to the cam bar n or by suitable means to a pinion 20, Fig. 5. Two reduced speeds are effected through the pinions f, g, respectively. The pinions h interengage in pairs for reversed driving, the corresponding brake h<2> being operated by a second notch n<2> in the bar n.
