Winches; driving-gear; brakes.-In winch driving mechanism for use on vessels of the trawler type, the winch is driven through constant-mesh variable speed gear from an internal-combustion engine. In the illustrated form a twin-barrelled winch is driven through constant-mesh epicyclic gearing, the driving being controlled by the manipulation of the change speed gear from either of duplicate controlling handles arranged at either side of the deck. The internal-combustion engine K drives the epicyclic change speed gear F through bevel gearing J and a clutch, the gearing being controlled through the vertical shaft F<2> leading to the twin operating handles. The changespeed gear operates a vertical shaft E connected to the twin-barrelled winch by worm gear. The winch includes a band brake furnished with lugs B<3> engaged by oppositely threaded parts of a screwed operating rod C. Specifications 158,066 and 158,312 are referred to.
