Abstract
462,164. Reversing - gearing. BRASFIELD, E. W., and WRIGHT, R. D. Dec. 1, 1936, No. 32979. [Class 80 (ii)] Reversing-gearing suitable for boats, hoists, &c. comprises two parallel countershafts 7, 8 geared together by a constant-mesh toothed pair 12, 13. Either of these countershafts according to the hand of the engine is driven by a gear 10 on the countershaft, meshing constantly with a gear 11 on a clutch shaft 5. A driven shaft 6 in line with the clutch shaft 5 has a fast gear 14 adapted to be engaged and driven alternatively by pinions 15, 16 splined on the shafts 7, 8 respectively. As a lever 17 connecting these pinions is thrown over by hand, the drive of the shaft 6 is reversed. This change of mesh is facilitated by a prior opening of an engine clutch 3, and an application of a brake 18 to slow down the shaft 6.
