Abstract
105,173. Neighbour, A. G. L., and Michell, A. G. M. July 18, 1916. Driving-gear.-A change-speed gear comprises a sleeve carrying the driving-pulley concentrically and rotatably mounted on the crank-shaft and geared to a countershaft within the crank case, the latter shaft being permanently geared with the crank-shaft and sleeve. The countershaft 5, Fig. 3, is driven by the gears 3, 4 at half engine-speed and drives the sleeve 12 through the gears 10, 11. The end of the sleeve 12 is formed as one element of a clutch, the sliding element 15 of which is double-ended and can also engage the clutch member 14 fixed to the crank-shaft 1. The outer surface of the clutch 15 is squared and fits a square hole formed in the boss of the belt pulley 17. A sleeve 22 mounted on the pulley boss is connected to the clutch 15 and engaged by a sliding fork 24 mounted on a pin 25. A small plunger 26 is forced outwards by a spring 27 to engage notches in the pin corresponding to the three positions of the clutch. In modifications giving only a single speed, the pulley 17 is keyed directly to the sleeve 12, which may be detached from the engine. In another modification, the pulley 17 is keyed to the clutch 15 and moves with it. In a further modification, the crank-shaft 1 and sleeve 12 are connected to the drum carrying the driving-pulley, by multiple-disk friction clutches.
