Variable-speed gearing.-Two of the rotating parts of an engine are employed as parts of a variable-speed gear, the driving-pulley being mounted upon one of such parts, and being adapted to be driven thereby directly or through the other rotating part at a different speed. Fig. 1 shows the driving-pulley 6 mounted on the crank-shaft 2 of a four-stroke-cycle engine and connected by chain gearing 7, 8 to the halfspeed cam-shaft 1. The movement of a lever 11 about the pivot 12 works friction clutches 9, 10, which lock one or the other of the wheels 7, 8, to its shaft, or leave both free. Spur gearing may be substituted for the chain gearing and in this case the clutch 9 may be dispensed with, and the spur-wheel 8 on the shaft 1 slid axially into and out of gear with the wheel 7. By duplicating the spur gearing, a three-speed gear is obtained. The pulley 6 may be separate from the wheel 7 and locked to it or to the crankshaft by suitably modifying the clutch 10, the wheels 7, 8 in this case remaining permanently in gear.
