Abstract

Turning-gear.-A dynamo-electric machine which is used to start an engine and is then driven to generate current has fixed on its armature spindle a pinion d; a chain-wheel i is also mounted on the spindle through a one way clutch. An axiallyslidable pinion f is used to connect the pinion d with teeth on the fly-wheel at starting. A chainwheel g mounted on the engine shaft through a centrifugal friction clutch normally drives by a connecting-chain h the chain wheel i ; the friction clutch prevents damage on premature ignition. The pinion f is moved by a handle j, through a wheel and rack m, n, the rack carrying a fork embracing the pinion. The handle also controls the switching-arrangements so that, at starting, a light current is first passed to the machine to facilitate gear connexion,the full current being afterwards supplied.
