Abstract

22,349. Baxter, C. Nov. 1. Gas and like engines, gearing for. The gearing enables a prime-mover such as a gas engine or electric motor to be relieved at starting of its load, which can be applied gradually, and is suitable for windlasses and other hauling - mechanism and steering-gear. It comprises a wheel f gearing with a pinion g on the main-driven shaft h and carrying on its spokes d two bevel pinions b which gear with wheels a loose on the shaft c and attached to spur-wheels i, which gear with pinions k driven by the motors. In a modification a train of spur-wheels takes the place of the bevel train. When the gearing is used with two motors running in opposite directions, they may be started at the same speed without imparting motion to the shaft h, which is provided with a brake, but any varia. tion in the speed of the motors causes the shaft h to turn one way or the other. When both motors run in the same direction, one is connected to its pinion by a friction clutch but is disconnected at starting. One gas engine may have a shifting crank so that it may run in either direction. With a single motor, a brake pulley is substituted for the disused wheel i and the brake is applied gradually as that on the shaft h is released. The wheels a, i may be connected by springs to avoid shocks. Specifications No. 12,877, A.D. 1897, [Abridgment Class Mechanism &c.], No. 13,646, A.D. 1899; [Abridgment Class Dynamo-electric generators, &c.], and No. 17,170, A.D. 1902, [Abridgment Class Mechanism &c.], are referred to.
