Abstract

10,299. Eastwood, W. Dec. 8, 1914. Variable-speed toothed gearing for internal-combustion engines is arranged to run in oil &c. in a chamber or casing 36 separate from the casing 14 enclosing the crank 2. Gears 15, 16 secured to the crank-shaft 1 near its ends mesh constantly with gears 18, 19 loosely mounted about a driven shaft 24 upon bosses 20, 21 of casing covers 22, 23. The bosses 20, 21 support the shaft 24. A sleeve 27, adapted to slide upon and rotate with an enlarged part 24<1> of the shaft 24, has dogs 28 at each end adapted to engage recesses 28<1> in the gears 18, 19 alternatively, so as to drive the shaft 24 at different speeds. The sleeve 27 is actuated by way of a bar 29 sliding within the shaft 24 and having a transverse peg 30 working in an aperture 31. A handcontrolled fork 29<1> coacts with a flange 29<2> on the end of the bar 29. In a modification, the gears 18, 19 turn loosely upon the shaft 24 instead of upon the bosses 20, 21. The lower part of this eating is removable.
