Abstract
336,737. MacMillan, C. H. Sept. 4, 1929. Valve gear.-In engines having the cam shaft or its equivalent driven by chain-and-sprocket gearing provided with a jockey pulley to absorb backlash in the chain, the carrier for the jockey pulley is fitted with a dash-pot or cataract for impeding its movements. The Figure shows the jockey pulley 1 carried by a bell crank 2 connected to a piston 5 working in a cylinder 6 open to receive lubricant splashed from the gearing, the fit of the piston being such as to allow the oil to leak slowly past when the piston is moved inwards. A relatively free outward movement of the piston may be provided by a passage 9 fitted with a non-return valve 10.
