Abstract
525,120. Valve gear; lubricating. MARCHANT, W. D.. and MOTOSACOCHE SOC. ANON. Jan. 12, 1939, No. 1128. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In order to damp torsional vibrations in camshaft drives, the camshaft gear 1 and its driving-gear 2 are housed in a close-fitting casing 3b, and oil under pressure is fed directly to the gear teeth so as to impose a constant resistance to momentary reversals of load caused by the valve springs. The casing may be formed by a recess in the end of the crankcase, the oil being fed thereto by the lubricating-system through a passage 3c directing the oil at 3d, 3e against the gear teeth. The oil film existing between the faces of the gears and the casing also exerts a frictional drag. The oil carried round by the gears is returned by a passage 3f to the lubricating-system. Further, the camshaft gear or its driver may mesh directly with a gear pump, or may form part of a gear-pump train.
