Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 80 (ii).] Change-speed gearing for vehicles comprises constant-mesh, preferably helical, gear pairs, one of each pair, preferably that on the driven shaft, being loose thereon and adapted to be connected thereto selectively by a plate clutch. A main or engine clutch is unnecessary. Driving and driven shafts 1, 4 are in line and a countershaft 2. is constantly driven through a pair 5 from the shaft 1. A plate clutch 9 for direct drive and other like clutches 8 for reduced speeds and reversal are operated selectively by suitable mechanical or electrical means. In the form shown, a separate spring- pulled rod 11 passes through a lever 10 extending to each clutch and, in neutral, a collar 13 on the rod 11 rests against the lever 10. To engage a drive, the rods 11 are displaced to the left by a pedal (not shown), and one of a set of spring stops 14 is selectively thrust between the corresponding collar 13 and lever 10. On release of the pedal, springs 12 assert themselves and the presence of the intruded stop 14 causes the clutch 8 or 9 corresponding to be operatively engaged.
