Abstract

Variable-speed gearing comprises gears 11, 30 adapted to be clutched to shafts 3, 24 respectively bv sleeves such as 29 provided with projecting clutch fingers 28. Gear 30 is loose and is connected by a sleeve to a dog clutch ring 31. The fingers 28 have a gap which in the position shown clear the clutch 31 so as to leave gear 30 loose. When sleeve 29 is slid either way, the. fingers engage clutch 31 so as to entrain gear 30. A similar finger and ring arrangement is shown at 14, 13. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes the four-speed gear shown which has three pairs of gears. There is a direct clutch drive and a first reduced speed through train 11, 30, 27, 15. Between the latter speed and the low speed through train 11, 30, 23, 20 there is a second reduced speed through train 15, 27, 23, 20. The middle gear 15 fast on an intermediate shaft 3 can be clutched either to driving-shaft 1, or to driven shaft 2, or to both simultaneously. Gear 30 is loose on and clutchable to countershaft 24. The second reduced speed is obtained by clutching gear 15 to shaft 1, and gear 20 to shaft 2. The latter speed is produced by a sleeve. 18 with dogs 22 passing through a spur gear 32 fast on shaft 2 and adapted to engage holes 21 in loose gear 20. The sleeve 18 when moved to the left engages splines 17 on the hub of gear 15 for connecting that gear to shaft 2. Reversed driving is effected through an idler, not shown, caused to connect the gear 32 to the gear 23 by movement to the right of striking- ring 29 which carries the dogs 28. An arrangement for obtaining eight forward speeds from four pairs of gears is set out schematically. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
