Actuated by running axle or wheel; forcetransmitting mechanism. -In brakes for motor and other vehicles. applied by ratchet gear actuated by the road wheel or axle for either direction of motion of the vehicle, a friction pulley c carried by a sliding frame d is normally held out of engagement with a second pulley a on the vehicle axle against the action of a spring f, but may be released by the occupants of the vehicle so as to he driven by the pulley a, thereby actuating gear-wheels h, i and ratchet gear l, m, n, which applies the brake through a pinion o, toothed sector p, and rod q. The ratchet-wheel n is held by a locking-pawl w, and both pawls m, w may be released from the wheel by the engagement of a roller t on the sliding frame d with lever devices adapted to raise the pawls. The occupants may bring the wheel c into action by releasing a catch engaging a lever g connected to the frame d, or by pressing a switch for operating an electric motor to bring the parts into position. The hand brake may be connected with lost motion to a drum r on the ratchet-wheel shaft so as to be operated by the ratchet gear after the power brake is fully applied.
