Abstract

Hand actuation ; force-transmitting mechanism.- Brake-operating mechanism for street cars, of the kind in which an horizontal hand-wheel shaft 15 and the associated mechanism is mounted at the upper part of a casing 5 upstanding from the car platform, comprises, in one form, a sheave or sprocket-wheel 7 geared by spur-wheels 8, 17 to the hand-wheel shaft and engaging a chain loop 9 attached at both ends to the brake connexion 10 running over the pulley 11. The brake is thus applied by rotation of the hand-wheel in either direction, and the sheave 7 can be quite narrow, as the chain is not wound thereon. The chain may be replaced by a band or strap 28, Fig. 4, adapted. to be wound convolutely upon the drum or sheave 27. The pawl 18 for locking the brakes in the applied position is pivoted at 20 to the casing 5 and to a rod 22 connected to a pedal 26, by which the pawl can be engaged with the ratchet-wheel 19. The rod 22 is telescopic and is adapted to contract against the pressure of the spring 22<1>, so that the pawl may be brought to the position of engagement when the mechanism is being moved to apply the brakes. The reaction of the mechanism holds the pawl engaged, and it falls by gravity to permit release of the brakes when the ratchet is disengaged by a slight movement of the band-wheel.
