Controlling different functions by same handle or lever; guarding against wrong movements. -In vehicles having electric transmission, two actuating-members are provided, one for the controller and the other for the electrical and the mechanical brakes, these members being so interconnected that either may be employed independently of the other, or one member may operate both the controller and the brakes. Figs. 2 and 3 show an arrangement of two pedals p, q, each capable of turning a controller drum having a series of driving-contacts on one side of a neutral position, and a series of braking-contacts on the other. The controlleroperating shaft carries two bevel-wheels u, v, which are permanently in gear with bevel-wheels s, t integral with disks x having ratchet teeth. The pedals are freely mounted on the spindle r, and each carries a pawl w, which is forced into contact with its ratchet disk x by the fixed guide z when the pedal is depressed sufficiently. The depression of the pedal p puts the controller into the running position without affecting the other pedal q, unless it has been, previously depressed, when it is raised to its inoperative position. Similarly, the depression of the pedal q to move the controller into the braking position is effected independently of or conjunctly with the pedal p, according to whether the latter is in its raised position or has been depressed. A lever l for the mechanical brake is connected to the pedal q. Straight toothed gearing or similar mechanism may be employed.
