Abstract
324,813. Raleigh Cycle Co., Ltd., and Wilkie, W. Feb. 2, 1929. Controlling variable-speed gearing. -In order to impart definite stepped angular displacements to a disc b which controls a variable-speed gear through a link k, Fig. 5, repeated oscillations are given to a pedal or handlever d. The parts are supported centrally on a fixed pivot c which passes through a fixed plate a between which and disc b are toothed means, not shown, for locking the latter in gear positions. The lever d is adjustably secured to a pivoted arm e which carries a double-acting pawl g. Supported on the plate a is a spring plunger h, Fig. 6, which normally holds the pawl g in a middle inactive position shown in Fig. 5. The disc b has two sets of ratchet teeth b<2>, b<3>, each tooth corresponding to one step of the disc b in that direction. When the lever d is moved, the pawl g is tilted by plunger h into engagement with a ratchet tooth. Continued movement turns the disc b through the space of one tooth until a stop i is struck. The arm e and lever dare returned to mid-position by a V-shaped spring dog j, Fig. 6, whereupon the stroke may be repeated in the same direction, or reversed by moving the lever d upwards. Instead of stops i, a pin j<2> may terminate a stroke by stopping the axial movement of dog j. A modification is described in which the pawl g works in a window in the disc b, the window being formed with the two sets of internal ratchet teeth.
