345,550. Controlling variable-speed gearing. BURMAN&SONS, Ltd., Ryland Road, and BRIGGS, T. H., 5, Varna Road, Edgbaston, both in Birmingham. May 7,1930, No. 14013. [Class 80 (ii).] A gear-control spindle a of a motor-cycle is moved stepwise by a ratchet gear comprisingfourplates b,d,k, w side by side. Plate w is fixed and carries a pin v against which abut springs r carried by " spring plate k. Plate k is loose on spindle a and carries the pivot pin i of a double-acting pawl h adapted to engage two opposite sets of ratchet teeth c on plate b fast to spindle a. The pawl pivot pin i. projects freely through a slot j in lever plate d also loose on spindle a and adjustably bolted at f to lever e adapted for oscillation by hand or foot. Lever plate d carries a " control " pin m engaging a slot l in the pawl h and passing rearwardly between relatively-weak springs q in spring plate k. On control lever e being swung, plate d causes pin m to compress a spring q, so as to rock pawl h into engagement with ratchet plate b, and then to carry plate b and spindle a along. One of the stronger springs r is also compressed, and the movement continues until one of a pair of stops x carried by spring plate k abuts against fixed plate w. On release of lever e, the compressed springs return all the parts to their original position except spindle a and plate b. This speed-changing step may be repeated in the same direction, or undone by a swing of lever e in the opposite direction.
